NEW DELHI: Several people have left the country after looting banks and enjoying the shores of the Caribbean Sea but nothing has been done against them, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury told Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

He was talking about a bill to prohibit the financing of weapons of mass destruction and also to empower the Center to freeze, seize or seize the financial assets and economic resources of persons engaged in such activities.

Lok Sabha passed the Weapons of Mass Destruction and Delivery Systems (Prohibition of Unlawful Activities) Amendment Bill 2022 after discussion.

Participating in the discussion, Chowdhury said: “I want to ask the government a question. Several people left the country one after another after looting banks here and we did nothing against them. On the banks of the Caribbean Sea, they appreciate it and we watch them from here via Facebook and WhatsApp.”

“We can’t do anything against these people who are stealing our country’s wealth and here…you need legislation to confiscate property,” he said, without naming anyone.

He added that it is alarming to know that the world has a large number of nuclear weapons and that more than 2,000 nuclear tests have been carried out.

Disarmament is the best protection against such a danger, he added.

ET Mohammed Basheer of IUML said that India has always advocated for complete disarmament and advocated for the adoption of this legislation unanimously.

NK Premachandran of the RSP said he fully supports the bill and the amendment subject to certain clarifications from the government.

He also drew members’ attention to the massive destruction that took place in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

P Ravindhranath of AIADMK supported the bill and appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for transforming the nation and taking several strategic initiatives.

Hanuman Beniwal of RLP was of the view that people are always concerned about the use of nuclear weapons whenever there are wars including the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

BSP MP Kunwar Danish Ali supported the bill and said that whenever there had been such legislation, “we supported it unanimously”.

India is a country that sends a message of peace to the world, he added.
