New Delhi: India now ranks third in the world for organ donation and transplantation, with the total number of organ transplants performed per year in the country increasing from 4,990 in 2013 to 12,746 in 2019, Minister Union for Family Health and Welfare (MoHFW) Mansukh Mandaviya said citing a report from the Global Observatory on Donation and Transplantation (GODT).

Speaking on the 12th Indian Organ Donation Day, the Union Minister of Health informed that there is still a huge gap between the number of patients requiring transplantation and the number of people who consent to donate organs after their deaths and called for greater coordination from society, doctors and the media to actively tackle organ donation reluctance and increase organ donation across the country.

Stressing that organ donation and transplantation activities have been negatively affected due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he urged people not only to pledge to donate their organs, but also to pass the word about the shortage of organs available for transplantation in the country and to inspire more to come. cheeky.

Comparing this act of organ donation to Indian values, Mandviya said, “Our culture emphasizes ‘Shubh’ and ‘Laabh’ where individual well-being is rooted in the greater good of the community. Society is changing rapidly and with the sacredness and preciousness of every life becoming visible to all, soon those who have committed ‘Angdaan’ will be viewed with the same respect accorded to those who donate hard-earned riches to charity.

Since 2010, Indian Organ Donation Day has been celebrated annually to commemorate the contributions made to society by deceased donors and their families. The event, intended to celebrate the gift of life offered by deceased donors to transplant recipients, was inaugurated by Union ministers to promote organ donation at a time when the country’s demand for organ replacement organs far exceeds organ donation. The occasion congratulated family members of deceased donors who have given their consent in a moment of mourning.

Ministers awarded prizes to encourage exemplary performance of transplant professionals in our country: The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) of Maharashtra won the award for most transplants from deceased donors while the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organization (ROTTO) for the Western region was recognized for its best performance. Hospitals for organ donation and the best transplant coordinators were also praised.

As part of the awareness, students were invited to participate in poster competitions. The winners were also awarded at the event.

The event ended with Dr Mandaviya leading everyone to lend their organs after death to those in need.
