FORT WAYNE, Indiana (WPTA21) – Nearly 12,000 Indiana businesses have received loans of at least $ 150,000 under federal program to fight COVID-19 economic crisis, data shows released Monday by the Small Business Administration.
The information – which was pledged last month following calls for greater transparency – represents the biggest beneficiaries of aid through the Paycheck Protection Program, or “PPP”.
In total, the documents show that 11,853 Indiana companies received loans of at least $ 150,000.
ABC21 delved into the data and found that at least 15 companies in the Third Congressional District, which encompasses most of northeast Indiana, have accepted loans between $ 5 million and $ 10 million.
45 others received loans ranging from $ 2 million to $ 5 million.
Local businesses receiving amounts ranging from $ 150,000 to $ 2 million number in the hundreds.

PPP was established by the CARES law, a broader effort to support the economy during the COVID-19 downturn.
Loans are issued by banks and are guaranteed by the SBA.
If certain conditions are met and the money is used for payroll purposes, the loan can be canceled and the cost absorbed by the government.
In addition to the named companies – those receiving at least $ 150,000 – 67,295 other unidentified Indiana companies have accepted lower dollar amounts.
Industries featured on the multi-million dollar loan list range from healthcare and manufacturing to hospitality and educational institutions.
