The Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched the Indian Space Association (ISpA) – the first industry association of space and satellite companies. Also present on the occasion were Shri Ashwin Vaishnav, Minister of the Union of Communications, Electronics and Informatics; Shri Ajit Doval, National Security Advisor of India; Dr Jitender Singh, Hon’ble Minister of State – Department of Space; General Bipin Rawat, Chief of Defense Staff of India; Shri K Sivan, President, ISRO and Shri Pawan Goenka, President, IN-SPACe.

Speaking on the occasion, Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi said: “Today is the day India’s space sector receives new wings. For 75 years since independence, the Indian space has been dominated by a single umbrella of Indian government and government institutions. Indian scientists have made tremendous progress over these decades, but the need of the moment is that there should be no restrictions on Indian talent, whether in the public or private sector. In a way, the country has given a new gift to the talent of Indian entrepreneurs by opening up the Indian space sector in its 75th year of independence. May this collective power of the Indian people move the space sector forward in an organized manner. The Indian Space Association (ISpA) will play a huge role in this regard. “

ISpA aims to contribute to the vision of the Indian government to make India Atmanirbhar and a world leader in space, which is emerging as the next growth frontier for humanity. The association will engage with stakeholders across the ecosystem for the formulation of an enabling policy framework that achieves the government’s vision. ISpA will also work to create global links for the Indian space industry to bring essential technologies and investments to the country to create more highly skilled jobs.

ISpA is represented by leading national and global companies with advanced capabilities in space and satellite technologies. Its founding members are Bharti Airtel, Larson & Toubro, Nelco (Tata Group), OneWeb, Mapmyindia, Walchandnagar Industries and Alpha Design Technologies. The other main members are Godrej, Hughes India, Ananth Technology Limited, Azista-BST Aerospace Private Limited, BEL, Centum Electronics, Maxar India.

Mr. Jayant Patil, Full Time Director – Defense & Smart Technologies, L & T-NxT is the Senior Chairman of ISpA and Mr. Rahul Vatts, Director of Bharti Airtel Regulation and Director – OneWeb India is the Vice Chairman. Lieutenant General AK Bhatt (retired) is the Association’s Executive Director.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Jayant Patil said: “India has the potential to become a technological leader and a thrifty service provider for the global space industry. Led by ISRO, the nation has built a formidable local foundation for the next phase of growth and even launched the cheapest mission to the Moon and Mars. Globally, private companies are increasingly helping to unlock the possibilities of space. ISpA aims to be a forum for the space industry in the Indian private sector and to partner with the Indian government and other key stakeholders in all segments of the space industry to empower the nation in the region and become a global service provider. We thank the Honorable Prime Minister for his blessings on this initiative.

Lt. Gen. AK Bhatt (retired) added that “ISpA plans to work in close coordination with IN-SPACe to advance the government’s spatial vision.”

According to ISRO, the current size of the global space economy is approximately $ 360 billion. However, India only accounts for around 2% of the space economy with a potential to capture 9% of the global market share by 2030.
