Number of deaths from coronavirus around the world has exceeded 200,000, according to the latest statistics from Johns Hopkins University. The increase comes after the UK reported 813 more deaths today, becoming the fifth country to record more than 20,000. A total of 2,865,938 people have been infected with the virus. About a third of the cases are based in the United States.

The number of people who have died in British hospitals as a result of the coronavirus has exceeded 20,000, official figures have confirmed. An additional 813 deaths across the UK on Friday brought the total to 20,319 – making the UK the fifth country to exceed 20,000 deaths after the US, Italy, Spain and France, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Priti Patel, the UK Home Secretary, drew attention to efforts to tackle crime during the lockdown.
