Two teenagers drown in Surat pond, bodies found

Two teenagers drowned in a pond in the Sachin area of ​​Surat on Tuesday evening. The bodies of the two teenagers, both 14, were recovered by firefighters on Wednesday afternoon.

Police said the deceased was identified as Abid Amjad Pathan and his friend Ajmer Naseem Ansari, both residents of Bhindi Bazaar in Unn and class 6 students of Unity School.

The incident happened when the two teenagers went swimming in the pond on Tuesday evening which lies between the villages of Jiyav and Budhiya in Sachin, police said, adding that the two teenagers were unaware of the depth and drowned in the pond.

The incident erupted when a passerby spotted the clothes and chappals of two teenagers on the banks and intimidated Sachin police.

Firefighters conducted a search operation late into Tuesday night, but were unable to find the bodies. Abid and Ajmer’s parents arrived at the scene and identified their clothes and chappals. The search operation continued on Wednesday and their bodies were found in the afternoon.

Fire officer Hitesh Patil said, “We are seeing such a pond for the first time. We believe this is an old pond and not used by people. Many people don’t know about the pond because of its indoor location… During the search operation, we found that the pond is sloppy and we go inside, it’s nearly 50 feet deep.

Police said a warning sign will be posted on the banks of the pond informing people of its depth.
