According to athleticism, Southampton could renew their interest in Manchester United’s Brandon Williams in January.
If he leaves, the youngster will be the second exciting full-back to be loaned out in a few months; in the footsteps of Diogo Dalot.
It shows how far United has come, strengthening a position that was once filled with palliatives.
United fans will remember when Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young were pushed into full-back roles with varying levels of success.
Now the Red Devils can afford to say goodbye temporarily to Dalot and potentially do the same with Williams. And that says a lot.
Dalot signed for United for £ 19million (BBC) but has failed to realize its potential so far.
On the opposite flank, Williams shone in his decisive campaign but now has Luke Shaw and Alex Telles is ahead of him in the hierarchy.
Gone are the days when one of United’s key positions was occupied by aging wingers. Now Solskjaer has some of the best in the Premier League in this role.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka is exceptional in defense while Shaw gets better every year and Telles’ attacking ability is really exciting.
A huge change
In many other clubs, Dalot and Williams would be the first choice options. Both are flexible enough to play on either flank and both are modern offensive players.
Dalot has shown a glimpse of his talent further and hopes to develop in Italy. Despite Wan-Bissaka’s presence at Old Trafford, it would be a shame if the Portuguese left for good.
He is still only 21 and could be one of Europe’s best full-backs in time.
Williams is another great talent and it will be interesting to see which side he ultimately sits on. This season he was due to replace Wan-Bissaka, but he is yet to appear in the league and has only accumulated 31 minutes in Europe.
United’s problem was the lack of quality full-backs. Now they have too many.
That’s not a bad thing and shows key areas have been targeted despite previous questions about United recruiting.
