Delhi police have arrested a man who allegedly faked his kidnapping to extort money from his father.

The accused, identified as Sushant Chaudhary, works in a real estate company as an operator and is said to have lost a lot of money doing business online.

His father, Tej Pal Singh, filed a missing person report with Central Delhi police station on Monday. According to the complaint, Singh last spoke to his son on September 19. When he visited Sushant’s office, he found that his son had withdrawn his salary and was last seen on September 8. His phone was also off.

However, on Monday, Singh received a text message from Sushant’s phone. The message indicated that Sushant had taken out a loan of Rs 1,50,000 and had not repaid half of the amount. The sender threatened Singh, saying Sushant would be in “big trouble” if the pending amount was not paid. The family members then paid Rs 75,000 to the person who sent the SMS.

Shweta Chauhan, DCP (Central), said her team checked Sushant’s bank statement and discovered that all the money had been transferred to “Buckzy” – a real-time online payment application.

Meanwhile, Singh received more messages from Sushant’s number demanding more money. Police said he remitted Rs 11,000 to Sushant’s bank account again on Tuesday.

During the investigation, the accounts were located and the police team raided to arrest the kidnappers. However, they found out that Sushant had not been kidnapped and was simply changing locations between Chandni Chowk and Kashmere Gate.

After several raids, he was captured from Gandhi Maidan in Delhi. Sushant told police he invested a lot of money in the ‘Olymp Trade’ e-commerce site, but lost everything. He had also taken out loans but suffered huge losses. When he asked his family for the money, they refused and it was then that he staged his own kidnapping.
